A doctor has warned that men with erectile dysfunction could suffer from more serious side effects including low blood pressure, stroke, chest pain, and fainting.
The drug has been prescribed to more than 10,000 men at a clinical trial conducted by LloydsPharmacy and NHS Foundation Trust.
Doctors at the trial, in which the men with erectile dysfunction were told to take Viagra or Cialis, found that these side effects were more common in men who used them regularly.
The trial was funded by Pfizer, which is one of the largest makers of Viagra.
The study was conducted by a team led by Dr John Hopkins University and led by Professor Peter Mabey, and is being called the Viagra Study. Dr Mabey was a urologist at the University of Edinburgh.
Dr Mabey said: "Men with erectile dysfunction should be monitored by a urologist to detect any potential side effects. They should also use these drugs regularly to avoid the risk of these side effects.
"The safety of these drugs is the top priority for Pfizer, who are already making significant progress with the Viagra trials."
Dr Mabey said: "Our study was designed to find out if Viagra and Cialis are as effective as these drugs and we wanted to identify the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction."
Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
It contains the same active ingredient as Cialis, Viagra, and Levitra but has a different name.
The study involved more than 10,000 men with erectile dysfunction.
Dr Mabey said: "The main finding of our study was that men who used these drugs regularly for more than a year were more likely to suffer serious side effects, including low blood pressure, stroke, and chest pain.
"Our results were in line with what the study had been finding for some time."
It found that Viagra users had a greater chance of developing serious side effects.
However, a of the men who took the drugs also had lower blood pressure.
They also had lower levels of a blood pressure-lowering chemical called beta-blockers.
They also had lower levels of folic acid, which is found in the blood.
Dr Mabey said: "These are two of the most common cardiovascular drugs, but they also have anti-platelet effects, which means they could lower the levels of folic acid in the blood."
The trial also found that men who used these drugs regularly for at least a year were more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
They also had lower levels of some other blood pressure-lowering drugs.
They also had higher levels of anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.
Dr Mabey said: "These drugs may be responsible for the higher risk of serious side effects in men who used these drugs regularly and had lower blood pressure and heart disease."
A of the men who took the drugs also had a higher chance of developing high blood pressure.
Dr Mabey said: "Our results showed that when men who had these drugs regularly had lower blood pressure and higher levels of blood pressure-lowering drugs, but also had a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
"The risk of having a heart attack or stroke was greater in men who had these drugs regularly and had lower blood pressure-lowering drugs."
The trial found that men who had been using these drugs regularly for more than a year were more likely to suffer serious side effects.
Dr Mabey said: "These drugs may be responsible for the higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke."
He added: "These drugs may also be responsible for the higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Viagra 50mg tablet contains an active component such as Sildenafil. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra may have side effects, including headache, flushing, dizziness, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and vision changes. It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. Erectile dysfunction can have a profound impact on a man's self-esteem and quality of life. By addressing ED, this medication can help improve a person's sense of well-being and overall happiness.
Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. The sexual activity itself can strain the heart and can further increase the strain by increasing blood flow. Consult with a healthcare professional to assess the risks and benefits in such cases. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.
